About the Uchila Mahalaxmi Temple

The existence of the Goddess Mahalakshmi temple in Uchila extends over 65 years.

This magnificent Uchila Mahalaxmi temple is located on the Edapaly-Panwel highway, in Uchillakere, Udupi, Karnataka.

Maa Mahalakshmi, who is regarded as the goddess of wealth is worshipped in this place as the 2nd most revered Lakshmi temple after Kolhapur Mahalakshmi temple in India.

The temple was built in 1957 by Kula Guru Sri Madhava Mangala of the Mogaveera clan on land provided by Sadiya Sahukar.

It has undergone a significant renovation at an estimated cost of Rs 32 crore. It is built as per Tulunad architecture, which is a blend of the architecture of Karnataka and Kerala.

The current temple has been skillfully rebuilt as per the Hoysala tradition of art by skilled sculptors.

Both the interior and exterior of the temple are made of granite and beautiful woodcarvings.

The artwork resembles the famous Belur and Halebidu temple of Karnataka.

Harish Acharya Kalamundhkoor is the artist who carved statues of wood in this temple.

The lake near the temple is located in the northeast corner of the temple complex as per Vastu and is spread out over 6 acres of land.

The Vasantha Mandapam is located in southeast of the temple’s outer structure, and a Dwajasthambam is located at the main entrance front side.

The Sanctum of the temple has conventional stone walls that are coated in copper sheeting.

Two enclosures surround it, the bigger, outer section is utilized for poojas.

The smaller, inner section is used to house the idol of the main deity of the temple.

Deities in the temple

The temple houses the main deity Maata Mahalakshmi Devi along with a separate temple for Bhadrakaali and Prasanna Ganapati on the premises.

Special Poojas in the temple

The temple priests observe special pooja seva at the temple as per Vedic rites.

These poojas a performed on Hindu festival days and especially on  Navarathri days.

Annual Pooja, car festival is celebrated in the temple every year in March.

Pooja’s like Samuhika Sathyanarayana pooja and Samuhika Shanideva shanti are also performed in the temple complex every Friday.

Festivals celebrated in Mahalakshmi temple, Uchila

The festivals celebrated in this temple are mainly related to Devi Mahalakshmi.

Every day, there are a series of pooja  rituals celebrated in the temple that includes:

  • Usha Kala
  • Nirmala Vosarjane
  • Udaya Pooja

Navarathri-A 9 consecutive day pooja celebrated to the goddess during the month of November.

Goddess Mahalakshmi is adored and decorated with garland, jewels, and silk clothing.

A huge flock gets gathered here to celebrate the Vehicle festival throughout this period, it’s called the Suggi period.

A lot of other communal activities are also included in the festival ceremony.

Dusshera is the best time to visit the temple.

Temple Rules and dress code

  1. Outside food and mobile phones are not allowed in the temple.
  2. Devotees are expected to visit the temple in Traditional Indian attire.
  3. Maintain hygiene in the temple while taking the prasadam

How to Reach the temple

By Road

The temple in 23 minutes drive from Udupi and and 55 minutes drive from Mangalore located off NH 66.

By Air

Mangalore airport is the nearest airport, from the airport the temple is at a distance of 35 kms.

One can take taxi or public transport to reach the temple from airport.

By Train

Padubidri is the nearest railway station, the temple is just 2.5 kms away from the railway station. You can take public transport to reach the temple.
