The Karva Chauth is observed by Hindu women after four days of the full moon, also known as the Purnima, during the month of Kartik. Since the festival is celebrated based on the Gregorian calendar, dates for this ceremony might vary. This is mainly because this particular calendar is not calculated on the basis of movements of constellations. Instead, the calendar is tabular in nature, which considers the moon’s movements.
Most Hindu festivals are based on the lunisolar calendar. Karva Chauth also happens to be one of them. Therefore, as a characteristic, the festival is celebrated based on astronomical positions. Out of all heavenly bodies, the positions of the moon are considered to be the main foundation for deciding the date of the festival.

Rituals on Karva Chauth
On the auspicious occasion of Karva Chauth, Indian married women, especially those living in the Northern parts of India, observe a day-long fast starting from sunrise and lasting till the moon rises. The main motto of this festival is to pray for the longevity of their husband’s life and the safety of their family.
The strength of women is noticed during this day, as they don’t even touch a drop of water until the moon is up in the sky. It means, in case of a cloudy evening, the fast might get prolonged. Once the moon is out, women use a traditional utensil to see the moon’s face followed by their husband’s face. Once this practice is completed, the fast ends.
Significance of Karva Chauth
One of the most famous hypotheses for the reason of its celebration is because, in the past, men used to leave their families behind, and serve the military in war. It is when their wives used to pray for their husband’s safe return and observe fast. The timing of the festival also coincides with the period of wheat-sowing, which marks the beginning of the cycle of the Rabi crop. Big pots made of soil, called ‘Karvas’ are often used to store wheat. The fast during Karva Chauth could have been a symbol of prayer for a good harvest season.
