Chandi Homam is one of the most powerful fire rituals for Goddess Durga in her fierce Chandi form. It is centred on the Devi Mahatmyam, also called the Chandi Path or Durga Saptashati. It is performed to invoke the Goddess’s protection against negative forces, obstacles, and enemies.
Who Should Perform Chandi Homam
- Protection from negative energy: For those seeking protection from black magic, hidden threats, or unexplained misfortune.
- Persistent obstacles: For those facing serious, repeated setbacks that other remedies have not fixed.
- Health or financial hurdles: For families seeking relief from long-standing difficulty in either area.
- Courage in adversity: For devotees seeking inner strength and the Goddess’s protection during a genuinely hard period.
Significance
The Devi Mahatmyam is a 700-verse text about the Goddess’s battles against the demons Madhu-Kaitabha, Mahishasura, and Shumbha-Nishumbha. Each victory stands for the win of divine feminine power over ignorance, ego, and evil. Chanting these verses while making offerings into the sacred fire is believed to call on Durga’s Shakti directly, making Chandi Homam one of the most powerful rituals for protection.
When to Perform
Chandi Homam is especially significant during Navratri, mainly on Ashtami and Navami. It is also performed to counter black magic, negative energy, or persistent obstacles that resist other remedies.

The Ritual Process
- Sankalpa and Ganapati Puja: A statement of intent, followed by prayers to Lord Ganesha first, so the ceremony goes smoothly — the standard start for any homam.
- Invocation of Chandi: The priest formally invites Goddess Chandi into the ceremony.
- Devi Mahatmyam chanting: The text is chanted in full or in part, depending on the scale of the homam, ranging from a single chapter to all thirteen.
- Offerings into the fire: Ghee, red hibiscus flowers, and sacred herbs are offered into the fire throughout the chanting.
- Purnahuti: The final and most important offering, which completes the homam.
- Aarti and Prasad: The ceremony ends with Aarti and Prasad given to devotees.
Benefits
- Removes negative energy: Helps with the effects of black magic and hidden threats.
- Grants protection from enemies: Shields the devotee from visible and hidden opposition.
- Resolves persistent obstacles: Effective for problems that have resisted other remedies.
- Restores courage: Rebuilds inner strength during genuinely difficult periods.
- Invokes direct blessing: Calls on the Goddess’s power for victory in adversity.
