What Is Varahi Abhishekam & Homam?
Varahi Abhishekam is a devotional worship in which sacred substances are offered to Sri Varahi Devi while prayers and mantras are recited.
Varahi Homam is a Vedic fire ritual performed with offerings into the sacred fire along with prescribed mantras dedicated to Goddess Varahi.
Sri Varahi Devi is worshipped in several Shakta traditions and is also associated with the Sapta Matrikas. In Sri Vidya traditions, Varahi is also known as Dandanatha, the commander associated with the Divine Mother. The Lalita Sahasranama includes the name Varahi and refers to her power in the destruction of Vishukra.
Why Perform Varahi Abhishekam & Homam on Mahalaya Amavasya?
Mahalaya Amavasya, also called Sarva Pitru Amavasya, is the final day of Pitru Paksha. It is traditionally observed for offering respect to ancestors through Shraddha, Tarpana and other ancestral rites.
This makes the day especially significant for devotees who wish to combine:
- Pitru remembrance and gratitude
- Prayer to Sri Varahi Devi
- Abhishekam and mantra worship
- Homam and sacred fire offerings
- Personal sankalpa and devotional prayer
The Varahi seva should be understood as a devotional offering to the Goddess. It does not replace prescribed Pitru Shraddha or Tarpana when those ancestral rites are required according to one’s family tradition.
What Is Mahalaya Amavasya?
Mahalaya Amavasya is the Amavasya Tithi at the end of Pitru Paksha and is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
Traditional Hindu practice considers this day especially significant for remembering and honouring ancestors. Where the exact death Tithi of an ancestor is unknown, traditions prescribe Sarva Pitru Amavasya as a day for collective ancestral remembrance.
Pitru Paksha is observed through practices such as Shraddha, Tarpana and Pinda Daan, depending on regional and family traditions. The observance and terminology can differ across communities and Panchang systems.
What Happens During Varahi Abhishekam & Homam?
The exact procedure may vary according to the temple and priestly tradition. A typical devotional sequence may include:
- Sankalpa — The devotee’s prayer or intention is formally stated.
- Ganapati Puja — Worship of Lord Ganesha before the main ritual.
- Kalasha Puja — Invocation and worship associated with the sacred Kalasha.
- Varahi Abhishekam — Sacred offerings are made to Sri Varahi Devi.
- Mantra and Stotra Recitation — Traditional Varahi prayers and names are recited.
- Varahi Homam — Offerings are made into the sacred fire while prescribed mantras are chanted.
- Prasada and Ashirvadam — Prasada is offered to participating devotees.
What Can I Include in My Sankalpa?
Devotees may make a personal sankalpa for themselves and their family.
A sankalpa may include prayers for:
- Family well-being
- Spiritual growth
- Strength and courage
- Peace and clarity
- Protection
- Gratitude to ancestors
- Fulfilment of a sincere personal prayer
