Bathukamma Festival

Bathukamma is the floral festival (Cultural Festival of Telangana) celebrated by Hindu women in the Indian state of Telangana.

In Telugu Batukamma means ‘come back to life’. Batukamma=Batuku(live or come back to life) + Amma(mother or godess).

The Bathukamma festival is celebrated for Nine Days. The festival is followed by Boddemma (Goddess Gauramma), it is celebrated two days before the Bhadrapada Amavasya, and it marks the ending of Varsha Ruthu (Rainy Season).

During this nine-day celebration, women arrange colourful seasonal flowers in beautiful floral stacks. These are all medicinal & wildflowers. The festival begins with Engili Pula Bathukamma and concludes with Saddula Bathukamma.

Bathukamma is worshipped as a form of Goddess Gauri, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Saraswati. A turmeric idol of Gauramma is placed at the centre of the floral arrangement and worshipped with devotion.

Women sing traditional folk songs, and dance together, these Bathukamma songs celebrate the glory of the Goddess, Telangana’s traditions, family bonds, and wishes for a prosperous harvest.

The festival highlights respect for nature, the beauty of flowers, and the importance of social unity. Just as different flowers come together to form a beautiful Bathukamma, the festival conveys the message that people from different communities should live together in harmony.

On Ashwayuja Ashtami Tithi (Durgashtami), the last day of the festival – women carry the decorated Bathukammas in a procession to nearby lakes or water bodies, singing and celebrating along the way. The floral arrangements are immersed in water, and traditional foods such as maleeda are shared with family and friends.

Dussehra is celebrated on the second day after Durgashtami, i.e, on Ashwayuja Dashami (The tenth day in Ashwayuja month), which is called Vijaya Dashami.

The Women gather and celebrate the festival all nine days by singing and playing around the Batukamma in traditional dresses.

Most Popular Bathukamma Songs.

This floral festival starts on the Bhadrapada Amavasya day as per the Amavasyanth calender. This day is also called Pethara Amasa or Pitru Amavasya in Telangana.

It marks the start of Sharath Ruthu (Autumn Season). Bathukamma is more than a flower festival. It is a symbol of Telangana’s cultural identity, women’s traditions, devotion to nature, folk heritage, and community spirit.
