This temple is nestled in the serene surrounding of a village called Kallahalli, on the banks of the sacred river Hemavati, in the cultural city of Mysore, Karnataka.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Varahaswamy or the wild Boar, a 3rd incarnation of Lord Vishnu along with his consort Bhoodevi, Goddess Lakshmi.

The temple is said to be 2500 years old built by a great sage Gauthama Maharshi.

The deity Varahaswamy’s murti in the temple is 14 feet tall and seated in sukhasana posture, considered to be the tallest Varahaswamy idol.

As a popular belief, the temple is said to curb the problems of devotees associated with the land.

Devotees who are bound with issues related to land are advised to take the red sand found around the temple in three heaps and make 11 rounds encircling(pradakshana) the temple.

Lord Varahaswamy rescued Mother Earth(Bhoomi) from the curse and domination of the demon Hiranyaksha, due to which he decided to reside in this temple.

After being built by the sage Gauthama Maharshi in the saligrama sculpture, the temple got submerged in the water bodies during cosmic changes to Earth.

Some 800 years ago, King Veera Ballala III was hunting deep in the forest.

While he was resting under the shade of a huge banyan tree he saw his hunting dogs chasing a rabbit.

He followed the dogs, and at a particular spot, he observed that the rabbit turned its back and began chasing his ferocious dogs.

On further discovery with surprise, he found that the place was blessed with unseen forces.

He dug the whole area and discovered the deity of the current temple Pralaya Varahaswamy hidden deep inside the earth.

The king further consecrated the murthi by building a new temple.

In the modern age, the temple was worn out due to floods and other climatic changes.

New construction work is persistently taking place with a 15 crore investment by the government.

This ancient story has been inscribed on the front of the temple in Devanagari scriptures on a stone slab.

As per a popular legend, during the Satya Yuga- the first epoch in Hindu cosmology, Earth(Bhoomi) was submerged deep in the cosmic waters.

The demon Hiranyaksha, seeking power and dominance, kidnapped Bhoomi and hid it at the deep bottom of the earliest-formed ocean.

On witnessing this disaster of the Earth, Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Varaha, a mighty boar to rescue Earth from the demonic powers of Hiranyaksha.

Lord Varaha Swamy plunged into the depth of the ocean, defeating the demon Hiranyaksha in a fierce battle.

He lifted the Earth on his tucks and brought her back to the surface restoring balance and harmony to the universe.

Filled with grace and gratitude Earth(Bhoomi Maata) relieved from the clutches of the evil demonic powers, requested Lord Varahaswamy to reside in Kallahalli.

Thus the present Bhoo Varahaswamy temple is believed to be a sanctified land of the presiding deities’ supreme powers to solve issues related to land.

 The temple is built in the Dravidian style of architecture of the bygone era, here are some of the stunning details of the temple:

1. Gopuram: This ancient temple features a tall gopuram at the entrance, it serves as a gateway to the sanctum(deity garbha gudi)

The gopuram is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures that depict various deities and associated mythological scenarios.

2. Sanctum and Vimana: the main deity of the temple Bhoo Varaha Swamy is housed in a rectangular, but pyramidically shaped vimana which is a distinguishing feature of the 12th century.

3. Mandapam: the temple complex consists of a pillared hall called the mandapam, it serves as a secured place for devotees to gather and perform rituals and prayer.

This place is well-designed with vitrified flooring, and ornate pillars with divine sculptures, mythological stories, and floral motifs.

4. Idol of the Deity: The deity of this temple is called known as Pralaya Varaha Swami and Adi Varaha Mahishi.

One leg of the deity touches the ground and the other leg is folded in the saligrama shila( a black stone found in the Gandaki River).

Here Varaha means boar and the horn of the deity is made lighter in color than the face and the eyes are carved to have a tingling red color like the wild boars in the forest.

On the left thigh of the deity that is folded, is goddess Bhoodevi( Maa Lakshmi ) is seated holding a lotus flower in one hand.

She is found to be encircling her other hand on the deity’s waist, the idol of Bhoodeviis 3.5 feet tall.

The deitites upper hands are holding conch and discus, also a Sudarshana chakra is carved on the back of the idol.

The lower hand of the deity holds goddess bhoodevi and the right hand holds the Abhaya Mudra.

The idol is huge and majestic with fierce eyes and a dominant posture, but from the inside the deity is kind, warm, and welcoming to the devotees.

Varaha Swamy’s birth star is Revati, on every month of this particular day, 1008 kalasa abhishekam is carried out.
