Importance of Sravana Masam

During this very auspicious Sravana month, Mother Lakshmi’s grace overflows in abundance, and so this month is dedicated to the worship of Sri Maha Lakshmi Devi.

Tuesdays and Fridays are two very significant days for worshipping any form of Divine Mother, and observing these days during the month of Shravana is even more powerful.

Lord Shiva Worshipped During Sravan Month

As per ancient scriptures, the Samudra Manthanam (churning of the sea) was done during this month of Sravanam. It was a combined effort done by both, the Gods & the Demons.

The Sumeru Parvatha was used for churning and the Snake Vasuki which circles around the neck of Lord Shiva was used as a rope. A large number of invaluable Gems came out of the sea as a result of this churning.

In the end, poison (Halahal or Amruth) came out which had the capacity to destroy everything. None of the Gods or Demons were able to deal with this poison and finally, Lord Shiva came to the rescue. Lord Shiva drank the entire Halahal and stored it in his throat which turned blue due to poison.

Hence, Lord Shiva got the name Neel Kanth ( Blue Throat ). This way, Lord Shiva gave a new life to everyone during this month and therefore, this month is supposed to be very auspicious.
