Amavasya is no moon day in Hindu Calendar. Hindus follows 2 calendars, one is Amavasyant (Amant) & second is Purnimant.
Amavasya that falls on Monday is called as Somavati Amavasya and that falls on Saturday is called as Shani Amavasya.
Hindus believe that Amavasya is not auspicious. On Amavasya day Hindus worship forefathers by offering food (Shraddha) to bring peace to ancestor’s soul and people are not supposed to travel or work.
In some areas, Amavasya is also called as Amasa, Amavasi. Traditional workers like goldsmith, hairdresser, dhobi, carpenter and mason do not work on Amavasya. Even in nowadays most of the people in India following it.
From ancient times Hindus followed Amavasya as holiday, Sunday off (Holiday) principle is came to India from British rule.
